As COVID-19 was at its height during the Fall of 2020 and human interaction was so limited that I didn’t know when it would all go back to normal or what normal really was, I had plenty of time to think about the impact that we have had on our planet. The magnitude of the devastation that we had caused was more visible than ever and through that I was inspired to make a piece reflecting that very notion. I dressed my subject in a traditional Ethiopian attire that is usually worn by elder women who have given up the “earthly” way of living and go to live in monasteries (known as menkusena) and took pictures which I then edited on Photoshop as well as Illustrator experimenting with the crop tool, filters, and textures. I made Her, Mother Earth, the focus of this piece.
